Op het verkeerde moment in Amsterdam.
You got caught at the wrong moment in Amsterdam.
Groningen is slechts 180 kilometer verderop.
Today zombies proved they can swim, as they emerged from the North Sea and ran straight for Amsterdam. Evacuation started late; all infrastructure is jammed. You just managed to get your loved ones into a helicopter, as you went to find your favourite pet.
Evacuation helicopters fly straight to the only city in the Netherlands with resurrected high walls: Groningen. Groningers, being the level-headed people they are, started building their wall the moment footage of UK zombies hit the internet. Groningers like to live in Groningen, hence they needed to prevent something as futile as zombies from changing that. Having secured the last available helicopter for your pet, zombies lunge into the rotors of the helicopter taking of and your beautiful, cuddly pet crashes and burns.
Filled with fury and an unrelenting desire to reunite with your loved ones, you put on your running shoes. Groningen is only 180 kilometres away. You have trained for this moment.
Surely, you can outpace the zombies at 7.5 km/h and get to Groningen… right?
The horde starts at the same time as you on Friday evening 25 September at 20:30 and moves toward Groningen at a constant 7.5 km/h. Drop below that speed at any point and they catch you, and your run ends there.
The zombie horde moves at a fixed 7.5 km/h: exactly what you need to sustain to reach Groningen within exactly 24 hours.
Your position is tracked against the zombie line. Anyone overtaken may not continue and appears on the result list as DNF. You arrange your own way back; if the zombie vehicle is nearby it can drop you at a public-transport stop.
Just reaching the finish is an achievement in itself: 180 kilometres in 24 hours, everything on your back, no crew. You're not up against other participants. There's your pace, the 180 km, and the horde behind you.

Groet,
Maarten
One of the best things about sport is developing a unique skill that could actually be useful in real life. With ultras, that skill is covering large distances on foot.
Granted, to put that skill to practical use, you quickly end up in apocalyptic scenarios. Situations in which we briefly forget that bicycles exist.
Anyway. During Pierewaai Trail, a beautiful ultra along the beaches of South and North Holland, I was inspired by seeing the distance between start and finish laid out on the map of the Netherlands. After that I was captivated by the self-supported principle of Marathon des Sables Legendary, where you carry everything you need yourself. And finally: consequences. A real challenge where you don't know whether you'll make it when you start. That's what I find inspiring.
That, for me, is the 180 km from Amsterdam to Groningen in 24 hours. I'm going to try…
Will you join?
